⚾ Baseball is Back in Stockton!

Spring in Stockton means one thing—baseball season is back! The Stockton Ports officially kicked off their 2025 season on Tuesday, April 8, and it’s already shaping up to be a very fun season. This year marks the team’s 20th season at Banner Island Ballpark, and they’re pulling out all the stops to celebrate—expect a season packed with special promotions, themed events, and plenty of fun for fans of all ages. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just looking for a fun night out, the ballpark offers something for everyone.

After being away for the last two weeks, the Ports have planned a full lineup of themed events for this week’s home games against the San Jose Giants in Downtown Stockton. Now in its fifth year, Stockton Small Business Week celebrates the hard work, creativity, and influence of local small businesses and the entrepreneurs behind them. This annual event not only honors their contributions to shaping the identity of our city but also gives them access to valuable resources for growth and success. It’s a week to recognize their stories, connect with the community, and foster an environment of growth and innovation for businesses at every stage.

Downtown Event Highlights

Downtown Stockton has been home to three exciting events during this year’s Small Business Week. The celebration began on a high note with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on the steps of City Hall (425 N. El Dorado St.) on Monday, May 5 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. This uplifting gathering honored small business owners who have been pillars of our community for over 15 years. It was the perfect way to kick off a week filled with energy, gratitude, and community pride. Downtown favorite, Nena’s Mexican Cuisine, was among the businesses honored this year!

On May 7th, the Downtown Stockton Alliance hosted Angelina Abella from the City of Stockton Economic Development Department to talk all about Stockton Small Business Week and other resources for our local businesses on Episode 66 of Talk to Downtown. You can watch the interview here. Throughout the week, the DSA will also be highlighting many Downtown Stockton small businesses on our social media platforms.

On May 7th, from 4:00 to 6:30 PM, Fund My Business, a hands-on workshop hosted by Centro Community Partners at 343 E. Main St. helped small business owners learn what they need to prepare in order to get their business ready for funding. This free session was tailored for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to better understand business finances, explore funding options, and connect with a supportive network. Whether just starting out or ready to grow, this workshop was a valuable step toward turning business visions into reality.

A Historic Gem in Downtown Stockton

Located in the heart of Downtown Stockton, the Bob Hope Theatre is more than just a venue—it’s a piece of local history. Originally opened in 1930 as the Fox California Theatre, this beautiful building hosts a wide range of events, from concerts and comedy shows to classic film screenings. The theatre features a stunning marble mosaic floor—spanning 1,200 square feet—at the center of its grand lobby. The marble was imported from Italy, and the mosaic itself was crafted by a Canadian artist. With its stunning architecture and vintage charm, the theatre offers a glimpse into the golden era of cinema.

An Unforgettable Movie Experience in a Vintage Setting

I recently had the chance to watch the classic film Easter Parade at the Bob Hope. As soon as I stepped inside, I was surprised by the grand interior—the ornate ceilings, elegant chandeliers, and old-style walls all made me feel like I had stepped back in time. Watching a vintage movie in such an authentic setting made the whole experience even more special. The film itself was full of charm, music, and timeless performances that left me smiling. A Must-Visit in downtown

The Bob Hope Theatre is a gem for anyone who likes history, cinema, or simply a unique night out. Being able to enjoy a local event in a place with such rich heritage felt truly meaningful. Keeping Downtown Safe and Welcoming: Community Ambassador Program

Downtown Stockton is a vibrant hub filled with businesses, visitors, and residents. Ensuring the area remains safe and welcoming is the mission of the Community Ambassador Program of the Downtown Stockton Alliance, which is a team working to support businesses, property owners, and the local community, 24/7!

At the head of this effort is Chevell Simms, who is the program supervisor and has been with the program for four years. His role involves keeping eyes and ears on the downtown area but also training new ambassadors and equipping them with the tools to succeed in the field.

The primary goal of the Community Ambassador Program is to create a positive environment in Downtown Stockton. The team, consisting of about ten ambassadors, conducts a regular route to check in on Downtown’s businesses; assists visitors; and helps connect unhoused individuals with resources like shelters and medical facilities. A typical day for an ambassador includes responding to calls for service, keeping the area clear of trespassers and panhandlers, and even providing small but valuable services like jump-starting vehicles or escorting visitors to their cars.

This job comes with its challenges. Community Ambassadors often have to handle difficult situations, such as addressing loitering and panhandling, or reporting criminal activity. Despite these challenges, Chevell takes pride in his work, especially when he sees new ambassadors grow into their roles. “It’s been very rewarding when new ambassadors receive information and apply it to daily activities, finding new ways to help the community,” he shared.

Looking ahead, with a committed team and a strong vision, the Community Ambassador Program will continue to enhance the safety and atmosphere of Downtown Stockton—one day at a time.

About Huddle Co Work, Host of The Lyte

For over ten years now, Huddle Co Work has provided Stockton businesses, nonprofits, and our community with a comfortable, inclusive working space for all. Originally founded to elevate Downtown Stockton’s image and increase its vibrancy, it has successfully done just that. Huddle Co Work has been a huge pillar in Downtown Stockton’s revitalization, helping to build a strong community and to inspire people to reach their full potential.

Operated by Matty Amen and Eric Bodary since 2016, Huddle Co Work has implemented many projects in Downtown Stockton over the years, from hosting events to supporting all communities in Stockton. One of their newest projects is popular open-mic event series The Lyte.

Origin of The Lyte Event Series

Co-founder of Huddle Co Work and co-host of The Lyte, Matty Amen, noticed a need for more experimental opportunities for Stockton’s local music and performance artists; in response to that need, he and fellow host Dante Milano launched recurring jam sessions The Lyte, on the 1^st Thursdays of the month from 9:00 – 11:00 PM at Huddle Co Work, 110 N. San Joaquin Street in Downtown Stockton.

Amen shares, “The Lyte is more than just an open mic; it’s a space where creativity and community collide. Inspired by the need for an authentic platform to showcase raw talent and celebrate art in its many forms, we created The Lyte to give performers and audiences an unforgettable experience.”

The Lyte is THE place to go to experience local musical talent. Describing the origin and growth of The Lyte, Amen states, “This space was created intentionally to center art” and to “contribute to the positive narrative that it’s safe to come to Downtown Stockton past a decent hour.” The event was soft-launched at first and given time to “grow organically by word of mouth before inviting folks via social media—a process that lasted about nine months before we finally started posting to social platforms.” Amen notes that, “Each session is alive with soulful performances, heartfelt connections, and a vibe that radiates positivity and inspiration. Whether you’re on stage or in the crowd, The Lyte offers a space to be seen, heard, and celebrated.”

The Vibe

To attend The Lyte, just come with an open heart and from a place of love. This inclusive and inviting environment makes you feel at home while listening to the performances. There is no pressure to perform, sing, or play an instrument. Although, if you know how to sing, perform, or play an instrument, go ahead – add your name to the list and do your thing!

My mom and I went to one of The Lyte events, and the vibe was just right—it was full of laid-back, relaxing performances. Jazz – one of my personal favorite types of music – was the focus on the night we went. On this occasion, the Edison High School music team performed, and I’ve got to say it was amazing.

This fun event series gives many local musicians and other artists the platform to perform and the chance to be heard by a live audience. It’s a safe place where the Stockton community can go to enjoy creative local jam sessions, art, live music, comedy, and other performances in an inclusive space. 2025 is here! Downtown Stockton has several fantastic events happening this month to start your year out right! From exciting and hilarious shows to family-friendly fun, there’s something for everyone. Let’s check out what’s happening in January 2025!

My Magical Night at the Stockton Lantern Festival

I recently visited the Stockton Lantern Festival, and it
was an unforgettable evening filled with light, culture, and fun. From the
moment I arrived at the ballpark, I was overwhelmed by this year’s “Magic
Ocean” theme. Each year is a new theme creating entirely new experiences;
this year, we have been transported from the Magic Forest of last year to the
Magic Ocean!

Stunning Lantern Displays
The highlight of the festival was, without a doubt, the
stunning lantern displays. Each lantern is a masterpiece, showcasing artistic
details and vibrant colors. Featuring glowing jellyfish, whales, and vibrant
coral reefs, each display was meticulously handcrafted by lantern artisans
using the ancient technique of traditional Chinese lantern making. Also, some
of them were moving and speaking!

Fun for Everyone
The festival offered something for everyone. While I
walked through the lanterns, I was dazzled by the magical interplay of light
and shadow. The interactive lanterns and activities provide quality
entertainment for families with children, but the hand crafted lanterns also create
an amazing and romantic atmosphere perfect for a date night! I think this
festival is a great option for anybody who wants to make a day special.

Captivating Performances
Another standout feature was the live stage
performances. Traditional Chinese dances, accompanied by stunning costumes and
music, created a special performance that was fun to experience. The energy and
skill of the performers made the show a highlight of the evening. There will be
performances throughout the two-month run of the festival showcasing a vibrant
mix of music, dance, and acrobatics.

Food and Souvenirs to Remember
Of course, no festival is complete without delicious
food, and the Stockton Lantern Festival delivers in the best way. They have
traditional winter offerings like hot chocolate, as well as ocean-themed fare, including
Sand Dollar Cookies, Fishbowl Cocktails, and Fish & Chips. They also offer
unique, hand-crafted souvenirs which I recommend to preserve special memories
of your visit!

shared, the “Stockton Lantern Festival is fun for all persons, regardless of
age and is an experience that will allow you to return again, seeing it through
a different perspective each time you walk the baseball field. Come
celebrate the winter season at Stockton Lantern Festival while you create

The Stockton Lantern Festival was a magical experience,
perfect for families, friends, and couples. If you’re looking for a night to
remember, I highly recommend visiting. There are plenty of days left before the
lantern display leaves Downtown Stockton on January 20th, so don’t
miss your chance to experience this highlight of the holiday season!
