CHUNG WAH LANE BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
Chung Wah Lane is a vibrant and historic alleyway located in the heart of Downtown Stockton, California. Renovated in 2021, this charming pedestrian walkway is lined with colorful murals, ornate lanterns, and brightly colored banners, giving it a unique and lively atmosphere. The lane is also home to the famous Stockton Chinatown, one of the oldest Chinese communities in the United States, which dates back to the mid-19th century. Chung Wah Lane is a picturesque, must-visit destination for anyone exploring Downtown Stockton.
BEFORE
Originally created in 1969, Chung Wah Lane was installed as a public plaza to honor the Chinatown formerly housed there, which had been displaced due to the installation of the crosstown freeway.
Over the years, the public plaza fell into disrepair, as outlined in this article from The Stockton Record.
AFTER
With discretionary funding from the DSA budget, and a License & Maintenance Agreement with the City of Stockton, the Downtown Stockton Alliance funded a much-needed revitalization of the lane.
