DIVERSITY PLAZA BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
In 2021, the Downtown Stockton Alliance, under a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Stockton, took on the beautification of the plaza behind the SJC County Courthouse.
The DSA chose to name the site “Diversity Plaza” to honor the fact that Stockton was named the most racially and ethnically diverse large city in a 2020 U.S. World News Report.
The plaza features rainbow-colored lightpoles with banners in complementary colors boasting inclusionary messaging; murals by local artist Sam Lynch; turf and beautiful landscaping; picnic tables; and two large, mirror-like metallic sculptures that encourage self-reflection and acceptance.
This plaza is a peaceful oasis in the middle of Downtown Stockton, where office workers and court visitors can enjoy a moment of calm amid the bustle of commerce.
