Meet Tina McCarty, downtown’s Parking and Venue Manager in the City of Stockton’s Economic Development Department! She is dedicated to the progress of the downtown community, passionate about Downtown Stockton, and is hopeful for what the future brings to the resilient community. As Parking and Venue Manager, Tina oversees parking operations for all five of downtown’s parking garages as well as street parking spaces. Her other duties include but are not limited to managing the operations and policies of the Downtown Marina, Bob Hope Theater, and other large downtown event venues. In addition to her role as Parking and Venue manager for the past four and a half years, Tina also currently serves as an active board member for the Downtown Stockton Alliance. This upcoming March will mark her one year anniversary at the DSA. Why does she do it? Tina enthusiastically shares, “I love it downtown!”

What changes have you seen in downtown over the years?

For the past couple years Tina has worked and spent in Downtown Stockton, there were a couple changes in the area that really stood out to her. For instance, she’s noticed more development in the downtown area and enjoys seeing the projects that rehabilitate and repurpose downtown’s historic structures while, “still maintaining the historic vibes of the buildings.” She notes the Medico-Dental building as an example, as it is being repurposed for future use as Downtown Stockton housing. Tina also mentions the recent changes in downtown’s streetscape — for instance, the change from traditional parking meters to the more effective and modern payment machines. These machines were fully implemented onto downtown’s streets in May of last year. In addition, Tina adds that the downtown schools, such as Stockton Collegiate International Schools and the TEAM Charter School, are great features of downtown Stockton, as it is, “very nice to see the liveliness of the kids.”

What are you most excited to see in downtown’s future?

Currently, Tina is excited about “so much change and development in our midst,” as she is proud of the current efforts to revitalize Downtown Stockton. In the future, she would love to witness the continued evolvement of downtown buildings and the addition of new retail businesses to the area that will help to draw more people and positive attention to the downtown area. One day (hopefully in the near future), she hopes Downtown Stockton will be a vibrant space and favored destination, even after 4 or 5pm! Downtown’s nightlife scene has definitely improved in recent times, as new businesses have worked to draw more business during later hours of the day.

Quick Three!

Where is your favorite spot to have lunch downtown? Favorite place to grab a coffee?

After some slight contemplation, Tina ultimately decided that she couldn’t pick just one go-to lunch destination (I mean, you can’t blame her- there are so many tasty eateries downtown!), so she revealed her top three: Cast Iron Trading Co., the Downtowner, and Nena’s Mexican Restaurant — yum! Have you been to all three yet?

In terms of her preferred spot to grab a cup of joe, Tina explains that she isn’t much of a coffee drinker. However, she does love tea! She shares that luckily, there are also spots to pick up tea downtown. For instance, Trail Coffee makes great tea and is very conveniently located for her to make trips whenever she needs a refreshing cup!

What is downtown’s spirit animal?

“A tiger, because there is so much to be excited about and the rest of the area will hear Stockton roar!”

How would you describe Downtown in one word?

With no hesitation, Tina chooses,“Evolving.”

Did you know that the Downtown Stockton Alliance (DSA) administers loans from $10,000 – $65,000 for small businesses in the downtown area through the Downtown Stockton Enterprise Loan Fund (DSELF)? Read on to learn more about this useful economic development tool.

What is the DSELF?

The Downtown Stockton Enterprise Loan Fund (DSELF), a 501(c)3 existing under the umbrella of the DSA, is a “non-profit, multi-bank community development corporation created to facilitate economic development in Stockton’s economically under-served central city.”

This successful loan fund exists due to the 2006-2007 initial contributions of $172,000 from the following lending institutions:

  • Bank of Agriculture & Commerce
  • Bank of Stockton
  • Community Bank of San Joaquin
  • Guaranty Bank
  • Oak Valley Bank
  • Wells Fargo Bank

Over the last 13 years, through the administration of loans to businesses like Juice it Up!, Chitiva’s, The Campus Downtown, J. Rusten Furniture Studio, and The Deliberation Room, the fund has grown to over $216,000!

How is the DSELF structured?

As a 501(c)3 non-profit, the DSELF is governed by a board of directors who provide policy oversight. The loan application process is guided by the DSELF Administrator, currently Courtney Wood of the Downtown Stockton Alliance, while the pre-approval scoring and loan recommendation is performed by the Business Loan Manager, currently Steve Lantsberger of the SJ Economic Development Department and Revolving Loan Fund.

Why is the DSELF important?

DSELF funds are used to provide much-needed capital to small and mid-size downtown businesses who typically “lack sufficient up-front equity and historic profits for conventional financing,” at an interest rate of prime + 2% (DSELF Mission).

Through the DSELF, businesses who may not meet a bank’s loan criteria still have the opportunity to access capital to open or grow their enterprises – and create jobs! – without being gauged by exorbitant interest rates that cut into their profits.

Since the DSELF isn’t a bank, is it easy to get a loan?

Although the DSELF is aimed at non-traditional borrowers, because the loans are considered “high-risk” there is still a detailed approval process which must be completed in order to approve a loan and protect the fund.

What is the application process like?

This year, the DSELF Board revamped the DSELF loan process and procedures. In addition to changing the loan range from $5,000 – $50,000 to $25,000 – $65,000, they decided to break the loan approval process into the four phases outline below:

  1. Pre-Qualification, which entails the initial application and non-refundable $200 fee, a credit score check, the submittal of an executive summary, and an interview with the DSELF Administrator
  2. Pre-Approval, which involves the submittal of 19 items outlined in the pre-approval checklist. These items include things like a business plan, financial statements, tax returns, description of collateral to be pledged, and resumes of the business partners, etc.
  3. DSELF Board Interview, which allows the board to ask an applicant questions regarding their application, business, loan request, etc.
  4. DSELF Board Vote, which makes the final decision regarding approval of a loan that has made it through the previous stages.

In Phases 1 & 2, a rubric is used to determine an applicant’s score and whether they proceed to the next stage in approval. In Phase 4, a majority vote is required to grant final approval.

The brevity of this process depends upon how quickly the applicant can submit all required documents to the DSELF administrator. It is recommended that applicants submit everything required within 90 days from the initial application date to ensure information being reviewed is up-to-date and accurate.

Who can apply?

The DSELF’s mission is to provide loans to businesses which fall within the Downtown Stockton Alliance PBID District. Apart from being located in downtown, to even be considered, applicants must be running or intending to run, completely legitimate operations.

What can a DSELF loan be used for?

Fortunately, DSELF applicants can use their loans for a variety of business expenses, from space renovations/buildouts to marketing materials. A few of the most common eligible uses are listed below:

  • Inventory
  • Working capital for rent, utilities, telephone, insurance, etc.
  • Equipment
  • Production of sample lines
  • Product development
  • Initial advertising/promotion campaigns
  • Office supplies
  • Building and leasehold improvements

Is DSELF taking applications for new borrowers at this time?

Yes! The DSELF is looking to lend out additional money within the next year. Apply!

Where can I go for more information?

If you or someone you know has a downtown business and you want to learn more about the DSELF, call 209.888.8630; email [email protected]; attend a DSELF board meeting – held the 2nd Tuesday of every month, at 12:00 PM in the DSA offices; click here to view the application; or click here to view the application guide.

This page has additional information about DSELF.

Take advantage of this amazing resource only available to downtown businesses!

Downtown Stockton is home to several event destinations that make life a little less boring. From concerts to ballgames, from comedy nights to fireworks shows, from hockey games to private theater performances—downtown has something for everyone to enjoy!

If you’ve ever had the privilege of attending one of these events in the area, the likely force behind it was entertainment company SMG.

In October, news broke out that “SMG, which manages Stockton’s five city-owned public venues, has merged with AEG Facilities to create a mega-company called ASM Global, a new, standalone global facility management and venue services company” (Bob Highfill, “SMG, Stockton Arena’s management firm, merges with AEG to form new mega-company,” Record.net, October 1, 2019, https://www.recordnet.com/news/20191001/smg-stockton-arenas-management-firm-merges-with-aeg-to-form-new-mega-company).

Behind the Scenes

With excitement brewing about this exciting change for the company (which may mean more big-name concerts and events for Downtown!), we were fortunate to have the chance to talk with Kendra Clark, General Manager of SMG, who also serves on the Downtown Stockton Alliance Board of Directors!

As a significant player on the team, she’s been a pillar behind the successful events our community is thankful to enjoy.

Not wasting any time after graduating, Clark dove right into the industry and began gaining hands-on experience. She shares, “I started right out of college as a Marketing Assistant at Save Mart Center at Fresno State as part of the grand opening team for the venue.” Eventually, she found her place within SMG. In her role as General Manager, she “oversees the Stockton Arena, Bob Hope Theatre, Stockton Ballpark, and Stockton Downtown Marina” (and even Oak Park Ice Rink).

Experience with Downtown Stockton’s Venues

Clark has seen SMG’s Stockton venues “evolve over the years,” noting: “We have seen tremendous growth in all the venues including steady increases in the number of events, increased programming. . .and now increased slip rentals at the Marina.” Evidence of this increase in programming was highly visible on the Marina this summer, with SMG cohosting a Marina Concert Series in addition to launching paddleboard and kayak rental right out of the Waterfront Warehouse!

She also shares that “these venues have really become a staple in the Stockton community and it’s amazing to see all the support and positive feedback from not only our local residents but from patrons visiting from out of town.”

As a backbone to the entertainment department for our city, Clark’s contribution to Stockton through her work with SMG makes “home” a better place for our community. The dedicated work she does adds to the overall Stockton experience and we’re excited for what’s to come through the new connections between companies. Faces of Downtown

By Jessica Nguyen

Mahala Burns is an active member of the Downtown Stockton Community. A dedicated realtor for Cort Companies, a strong advocate for the revitalization of downtown, and an active board member for the Downtown Stockton Alliance, Mahala has witnessed Downtown Stockton’s evolution firsthand over the twenty-six years that she’s worked in this community. It was a pleasure to hear from her perspective.

How It All Started

This year marks Mahala’s 26th year working in Downtown Stockton! Wondering what the downtown area was like back when she first started? She shares, “It was very different…kind of a ghost town. There wasn’t a lot of activity and there were many boarded-up buildings.” Since then, downtown’s recent influx of local businesses, events, and other significant changes make it a much more vibrant community. Mahala adds, “It’s getting better every year!” We agree!

DSA Involvement

Dan Cort, CEO of Cort Companies, was one of the DSA founders and served on the board until Mahala later took over. She’s now been a DSA Board Member Mahala for 15 years! While reflecting on her time here, she points out that the DSA office hasn’t always been at its current Bridge Place location: “It’s [the DSA] been in a couple different locations, but the mission has been the same- to support property owners.” She’s proud of the DSA’s work in serving local businesses and its dedication to bringing people downtown to support local shops and events.

What Contributed to Downtown’s Change?

When asked about the specific changes that have positively impacted downtown, Mahala answers with “economic vitality.” The price per square foot for downtown property spaces haven’t increased dramatically over the past several decades, but much of the change comes from the energetic business owners who decided to set up shop downtown. Mahala commends these millennials for bringing in trendy businesses such as coffee shops and living/work spaces.

However, she credits the Stockton Collegiate International Schools charter school for being the highest agent of transformative change in Downtown. Eleven years ago, the k-12 school made Downtown Stockton its home and, “introduced children to the downtown area.” This was quite significant, for Mahala shares, “seeing kids injected so much life and vitality to the area… it gave us hope that there was a future.” This helped to quell myths that Downtown Stockton was a dangerous area that should be avoided at all costs. The school (along with the Team Charter School that opened later) proved to adults that if kids were safe in Downtown Stockton, they would be too.

What Are You Most Excited To See In Downtown’s Future?

Mahala explains that Monday through Friday within the hours of 9am to 5pm, Downtown Stockton’s streets are pretty active with workers, shoppers, and visitors. Unfortunately, the evenings are significantly less lively. Therefore, Mahala is most excited for the 81 new market-rate residential spaces/units that will soon be added in various buildings around downtown. There will be live/work spaces as well as regular loft apartments in areas such as across the street from Trail Coffee. She believes that having people live in downtown is the next step to breathing life into those quiet evenings.

Favorite Place to Have Lunch Downtown?

Without hesitation, Mahala shares that her go-to destination is the Thai Thai Restaurant, where she orders chicken noodle soup with broccoli.

Favorite Coffee Spot Downtown?

Mahala’s favorite spot is Trail Coffee, and she highly recommends the Coffee Milkshake! (Honestly, I’m now convinced to try it)

What is Downtown’s spirit animal?

“A beaver, because of the water and because beavers are persistent- they build their lodges and someone destroys it- next day, it’s back up again…they don’t give up.”

Intro

Have you ever wondered who is behind Downtown Stockton’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, or maybe who designed the Downtown Visitor’s guide you’ve seen around town?

Look no further than Alex McBride, DSA’s Marketing & Communications Director. This week we sat down with Alex to learn more about the role she plays in making Downtown tick.

Background

If you ever visit Alex’s DSA office, you’ll immediately notice Downtown memorabilia peeking out at you from every direction – a Stockton Kings towel nestled on the exposed brick wall, an Amgen Tour 2019 pass dangling from a thumbtack, a Stockton Heat poster mounted on corkboard, a Downtown Stockton beanie perched on the desk corner, a Stockton Ports promotional lunchbox wedged into her bookcase –  all clues alluding to her role at the center of Downtown marketing.

For the interview, Alex settles into her desk chair, which is backlit by a window overlooking Di Carli Square and the glittering Downtown waterfront. She has her phone within arm’s reach, poised to take advantage of impromptu Downtown photo opportunities and keep tabs on the latest Downtown social media alerts.

A Stockton native, and recipient of a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of the Pacific, Alex began working at the DSA in September of 2018.

She sums up her role as follows: “I oversee all social media scheduling and content, promote businesses and events…[work on] the blog, create marketing campaigns for new events, [and create plans] for new projects.”

When asked how she feels about her position, Alex shares, “I really enjoy it because I have a lot of freedom choosing the direction of projects. It’s refreshing – it’s a lot of work but I appreciate the chance to be creative.”

Social Media

With social media at the heart of Downtown’s marketing strategy, Alex has developed unique tactics for each platform. “On Facebook, I mainly focus on event promotion,” she reveals, while on Twitter, “I take a light-hearted approach, with memes,” to keep people engaged in the Downtown conversation. When it comes to Instagram, she shares interesting or beautiful things that may be lesser-known: “For example, in the California Building, if you look up [the ceiling is really pretty] – it’s not something you [typically] notice walking around.”

When it comes to promoting new businesses on social media, Alex notes, “If it’s more of a professional services business, [I’ll use] Facebook.” She also likes to promote new businesses via Instagram Stories; if the business has their own Instagram handle, she’ll share their profile or one of their posts with DSA’s many followers.

Graphic Design

While a significant portion of Alex’s time is spent juggling DSA’s social media accounts, another portion is focused on graphic design, allowing her to make use of her UOP degree and to exercise her creativity.

“When I first started, they[the DSA] had created a new logo, which was great, but there wasn’t cohesive branding across all media,” she shares thoughtfully, “what I’ve enjoyed most is just…developing the brand of DSA.”

Since arriving, Alex has re-designed the Downtown Visitor’s Guide and Annual Report, while also creating new logos and materials for Walk With Weber, Full Moon Riders, various internal documents, and several upcoming campaigns, including National Night Out 2019.

Her number one tip when it comes to graphic design? “Don’t use too many fonts,” she states firmly, “also, balance is key.”

Perspective on Downtown

When asked to describe the condition of Downtown today, Alex shares emphatically, “I love Downtown.”

“A lot of times people just see the weeds – there are still flowers here.”

She’s excited to see the way members of the Downtown community are strengthening and supporting each other. “They’re coming together, like the group of businesses on San Joaquin Street,” who have been hosting outdoor markets with music. She says this kind of community building is what will help Downtown to thrive.

Additionally, Alex notes that the new wave of live/work spaces coming into Downtown has brought excitement and energy to the area.

Looking Forward

Alex sees a clear vision for the future of Downtown and DSA’s role in it.

“In the future, I see more retail, more shops like Freckled Moon and Rainbow.” With the expected influx of downtown residents, she believes that retail will become very important for Downtown’s economic development.

As for DSA’s part, she offers, “We are working to create a walkable, beautiful Downtown – making sure it is a place people want to be, a branded Downtown with life in the core.”

Food For Thought

When asked to offer one closing statement to our readers, Alex glances thoughtfully out of her window toward the scenic waterway, and then imparts, “Be open to the positives.”

If you’re seeking promotion of a Downtown Event or Business, contact [email protected] or visit this link on the DSA website. To learn more about Downtown happenings, be sure to follow DSA on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

What Downtown summer event are you most excited about?

“Movies At the Point. They have Aquaman and Captain Marvel in the line-up – I’m a huge Marvel fan.”

Bicycling! Whether it’s a hobby, how you get to work, or a way of life, there are a series of events coming soon that you need to be aware of right away! For the fifth year, the Downtown Stockton Alliance is hosting the Full Moon Riders starting TODAY, April 20th. The Full Moon Riders will be gathering to ride every month on the evening of the full moon from April through October. Each ride will be led by various local organizations and be an opportunity to experience the wonder of downtown Stockton. This will also be the first time that the Downtown Stockton Alliance will be donating $1 per rider to a different non-profit organization at each ride.

Courtney Wood, the economic development coordinator for the Downtown Stockton Alliance  explained the background and purpose of the Full Moon Riders event. “I think the original goal was that downtown was kind of empty at certain times and [the Downtown Stockton Alliance] were like, ‘wow, this would be great to have bike riding here’ because there aren’t many cars in the evenings when people go home from their offices. So it’s kind of a cool place to bike ride. I think that was part of it: to get people down here to use the streets to promote bicycling.”

Bikes & Bites

Not only is this event an opportunity to give visitors and residents a unique look at downtown Stockton, but also a chance to grab a bite to eat with fellow cyclists. At the end of rides, leaders will direct the riders to some of their favorite restaurants in the area for a filling and delicious dinner or maybe just a quick snack. If anything, it is a chance for people to come together after a fun ride and take pleasure in some downtown Stockton cuisine. Some participating restaurants may even have special deals and offers for the Full Moon Riders.

And if that still doesn’t sound like a good time, there will also be a giveaway at each ride for the first 100 riders. Registration always begins at 5:15pm in Janet Leigh Plaza on the day of the ride.

The Downtown Stockton Alliance Ambassadors will be helping out at the event. Special events ambassador Shirley Griffith explained the role that the ambassadors play during the event. “We have a table set up with giveaways and signup sheets, so at the beginning we get everybody’s name and email. We also take liability forms and give the riders the giveaway prize. And when they leave the plaza to go on their rides, we load everything up, go to the restaurant that is participating that night and put out bike racks.” So while everyone is enjoying themselves on their rides, it’s the ambassadors that are making sure everyone has a great experience.

So if you’re someone who simply enjoys a leisurely bike ride or you’re a passionate bicyclist, you definitely want to join the Full Moon Riders and experience another side of downtown Stockton. Just remember to ride responsibly and that children under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet.

The mission of the Downtown Stockton Alliance is two-fold. One, it’s to promote businesses, housing, and events in downtown Stockton; second, is to create a vibrant and comfortable community for all residents and visitors. One of the ways that the Downtown Stockton Alliance fulfills this mission is through their downtown ambassadors.

Patrolling the downtown area; escorting visitors to their cars; maintaining a good relationship with local business owners; promoting businesses and events; and creating a welcoming presence are just a few duties performed weekly by the DSA’s ambassadors. The DSA currently has two on staff, Shirley Griffith and Johnny Palacios; if you see them out on the Downtown streets, be sure to stop and say hello!

Johnny Palacios has been an ambassador with the Downtown Stockton Alliance for 12 years. Some of his current responsibilities include maintenance of DSA’s online event calendar and business directory. Palacios provided some insight into the ambassador role at the DSA: “We are the people-persons for the Alliance.” He explained, “What we do is work with downtown businesses. We try to get to know them on a first named basis…they know who we are and we know who they are. We go in there to visit and say hello. We ask them if they have any flyers…especially when they first open.” By forging and maintaining a strong and friendly relationship with local businesses, the ambassadors help make new businesses feel welcome and are able to give visitors places to go when they come downtown.

Shirley Griffith has been an ambassador since day one of the Downtown Stockton Alliance’s inception in 1997, and has been a witness to how much the community has grown and changed overtime. “It was bad…there was nobody down here at that time. Now we’ve come a long way because there are people all over,” shared Griffith, who currently oversees beautification projects, like bollard and curb painting. Through the efforts of local businesses, community leaders, and individuals who love downtown Stockton, the district has cleaned up and become a place where people can work, play, and eat.

There may not be many of them, but the Downtown Stockton Alliance ambassadors are integral to the Downtown Stockton Alliance’s functions. They help maintain a close-knit community where businesses support each other and where visitors can leave with a pleasant experience. Through their efforts and the efforts of others in the district, the ambassadors know that Downtown Stockton has a bright future.

Downtown Stockton has a rich and interesting past. However, many who work, live, and play in the downtown area are unaware of the history behind Downtown buildings they walk past every day. Fortunately, that history is being preserved for any who wish to learn it with a self-guided walking audio tour, Walk With Weber, scheduled to launch on the DSA website Feb. 17th – Captain Weber’s 205th birthday!

About the Tour

Narrated by retired DSA Ambassador and historian, Manuel Laguna, Walk With Weber will provide users with the historical background of Downtown Stockton’s oldest buildings, including the B&M Building, St. Mary’s Church, the Bob Hope (Fox) California Theatre, and many more. There will be audio clips for over 20 buildings in Downtown Stockton, accompanied with historical photos dating back to the mid-1800s!

Tour Narrator: Manuel Laguna

Certified Tourism Ambassador and former DSA Ambassador, Manuel Laguna, has given historical walking tours of Downtown Stockton for over 11 years. During his time at the DSA, Manuel was devoted to researching downtown’s past in order to preserve the area’s history for the future.

After his retirement, the DSA was determined to develop a way to continue sharing his great work with new generations; the Walk With Weber tour was conceived as the vehicle for commemorating Manuel’s tremendous love for and knowledge of the downtown area.

When approached with the walking audio tour concept last fall, Manuel eagerly agreed to voice the tour, and easily compiled the list of historical buildings along with their accompanying narratives.

All Hands on Deck

The entire DSA team has been working to ensure that this unique project becomes an informative and entertaining resource people will enjoy using for research or simply for satisfying their own curiosity. Courtney Wood, DSA’s Economic Development Coordinator, has been responsible for most of the project’s planning and execution, while Marketing Director Alex McBride and CEO Michael Huber have contributed significantly to design and project promotion, respectively.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a Stockton native, if you have any interest in history or architecture, check out Walk With Weber to learn something new about Downtown Stockton’s buildings. It’s fascinating to discover how much the area has changed over the years, but also intriguing to see how much it has stayed the same. As time goes on and people come and go, many of Downtown Stockton’s historic buildings still stand. They serve as a reminder that no matter what happens, the city will continue to stand proud.

How to Listen

  1. On your smartphone, open your browser.

Downtown Stockton is a lively place with people coming and going to live, work, and just enjoy themselves. To support such a community, a lot of time and effort has to be put into many different aspects and areas so that it will continue to thrive. One of these areas is in economic development. At the Downtown Stockton Alliance, Courtney Wood works as the economic development coordinator and has been serving in that role since Autumn of 2017.

What is Economic Development?

Courtney Wood

But what is economic development? Courtney Wood explained, “The economic development aspect at the DSA is aimed at fostering economic growth, which fuels the community’s well being. With more economic growth, there will be more disposable income downtown. This means better resources and quality of life for those who live and work here. What I do is basically keep track of who owns what property, get in contact with them, see what they are trying to do with the property, and then based on what they tell us about what their plans are, we try and see if we can support them in anyway. “

In her position, Courtney Wood ensures that those property owners have the full support of the DSA. This includes having access to resources needed to succeed in their endeavors. One recent example is with the Bearpaw Group, who purchased three buildings downtown. “We wanted to see what their goals were. It turns out they bought the three buildings and were interested in turning them into mostly residential units.” Courtney Wood shared, “Some of their spaces are live and work spaces, so that means people are getting a great deal. Because they can have their working and living space for a rent that would be half of what they would pay for two separate spaces. So that was neat and we were there to listen to what they were doing and support them.”

Enhancing Economic Development in Downtown

For Courtney Wood, being an economic development coordinator has been a positive experience. She has learned more and grown while serving the downtown Stockton community. In addition, she has taken initiative to improve the area for property owners. “I have had a lot of thought about things that we could do. For instance, I did see that our communication with property owners had been poor. We didn’t have very much outreach with them at all. So I gathered phone numbers and emails for as many property owners as possible. I compiled them all so we could send out regular notices to them.” By maintaining a close relationship with property owners, Courtney Wood has made property owners more comfortable in downtown Stockton and aware that there are resources available to help.

As Economic Development Coordinator, Courtney Wood is making a difference in the district. As downtown Stockton continues to strive toward new heights and grow as a community, it is economic development that will play a large part in facilitating a bright and prosperous future.

Whether they are working hard or hanging out and having fun, people love downtown Stockton and are proud of the progress the district makes every single day. It’s easy to notice the sense of the pride the district has by walking around and seeing banners posted along the streets, letting everyone know that they are in downtown Stockton.

Many are probably already familiar with the All-American City Award banners around the Stockton Town Hall. An award that Stockton has received several times and is an award given by the National Civic League that is the oldest community recognition program in the United States. There are also the banners along El Dorado Street that highlight Stockton’s sports teams such as: the Stockton Ports, Stockton Heat, and the Stockton Kings. These serve as a reminder to everyone that this is a city with a sports legacy and culture, which is an integral part of downtown Stockton.

Creating a Downtown Brand

New Downtown Stockton Banners went up before the end of 2018 along Weber Avenue catching everyone’s attention with a light blue, dark teal, and unique logo. The banners aim to create a brand that identifies the downtown district. It is something that everyone and every business downtown can associate with themselves. In fact, the light blue, Downtown Stockton logo on the banners can be used by any local business or organization that is interested. It is a brand for anyone who loves downtown Stockton.

And the new banners are definitely a welcome addition by the community. “Since we’ve come back from holiday, I’ve had at least ten to twelve people say they’re amazing. They really pop and show pride for downtown.” said Mike Huber, the executive director of the Downtown Stockton Alliance, “I’ve had a lot of citizens tell me that they like the sports banners being up and the designs on those. They show that we’re a major sports city.”

Matt Amen, executive director of Huddle Cowork + Create, shared a similar sentiment, “The new banners along the Weber corridor bring more color and life to Downtown Stockton! Looking forward to seeing more businesses represented on these throughout the district.”

Not only is downtown Stockton a district that is making great strides in business and creativity, but it’s outward appearance is reflecting those efforts. It is a great place to live and work and the banners let anyone who visits know immediately that people take pride in downtown Stockton and want everyone to know it.

DSA Banner Program

The Downtown Stockton Alliance’s banners are just one method to liven up the area with color! But it’s not just for the DSA and the sports teams!
