If you live in Stockton, chances are you’ve been to or have at least heard of Cast Iron Trading Co. (and if you haven’t, here’s your chance!). Since it’s addition to the downtown community three and a half years ago, Cast Iron has continued to serve up both delicious specials and good vibes. It’s hard not to notice the positive energy in the space brought on by the friendly staff, happy customers, and local performers. If you’re interested in dining in an amiable climate complete with live music and craft beer (and of course great food- burgers and brussels sprout tacos, anyone?), this is the place for you!

About the Owner

Eric Lee, Stockton native and owner of Cast Iron, shares that he has always had a love for food and cooking- in fact, he describes his entire family as “foodies.” Before becoming a business owner, he worked in restaurants and soon after had the idea of bringing pop-ups to downtown. In fact, Eric explained that he and his business partner were among the first to introduce pop-ups to Stockton. They quickly gained traction and solidified a name for themselves within the community by setting up as a vendor at the Stockmarket, a Stockton marketplace that offers handmade crafts, live music, and street food. After that, they decided to turn their cart “into a full-time gig.”

Why Downtown Stockton?

During his experience as a street food vendor at the Stockmarket, Eric started seeing, “a lot of movement and blooming potential [in the area].” It’s true that downtown may have some challenges, he says, but he acknowledges the community’s contagiously positive energy in their efforts to revitalize the downtown area, and wanted to be a part of it. What else does Eric love about downtown? He enthusiastically cites the architectural history and unique infrastructure of its buildings. 

What Makes Cast Iron Unique?

It’s a given that Cast Iron serves up some amazing dishes and that their, “craft beer is easily the best in Stockton!” However, there’s another key feature that makes this restaurant unique:  its commitment, enthusiasm, and connection to the local arts. From the vibrant interior decor designed by local artists to the local musicians who enliven space with their performances, Cast Iron is committed to supporting local artists and in doing so, emphasizes the importance of community.

How Can We Support Cast Iron Trading Co. Amidst the Pandemic?

Because of the current COVID-19 pandemic, Cast Iron’s priority is to be “cautious for our staff and community.” Thus, they’ve reduced their indoor capacity to adhere to CDC guidelines. However, this doesn’t mean you have to put off your visit because we’ve got some GREAT news— Cast Iron recently got the go-ahead to convert the alleyway adjacent to their restaurant into an outside dining area! The space is newly adorned with new paint, greenery, furniture, shady umbrellas, and decorative string lights that tie it all together (don’t be shy, we know you want to come see it!).

Cast Iron is currently open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings for dinner (4pm–10pm) and Sundays (from 10am–3pm) for brunch. They’ve also recently reintroduced Friday night live music in their new alley space! Eric is considering booking musicians for Saturdays too, and is also currently eyeing the possibility of putting on a couple pop-up events in July. The Downtowner is located in—you guessed it!—our very own Downtown Stockton! Not only does its name fit perfectly into its location at 40 N. Sutter Street, but so does its friendly atmosphere and incredibly delicious food items! The Downtowner specializes in “Good Mood Food,” which owner Kevin Gilman describes as “comfort food, with a healthy kick.” Sounds too good to be true? Come try it for yourself!

A firm believer in the idea that restaurants should be able to feed all who come, Kevin faces dietary restrictions head on by also offering vegan, vegetarian, paleo, gluten-free, and keto dishes at The Downtowner. This has resulted in a diverse and creative menu, including nachos that use a vegan cashew-based queso!

About The Owner

Kevin Gilman, one of the creative minds behind The Downtowner, grew up in Ashland, Oregon and worked at several restaurants throughout college. It was these experiences that sparked his passion in food and beverage, leading him to pursue a career in the food industry. He soon found himself managing the Food and Beverage Department at the Tetherow Golf Resort in Bend, Oregon, while simultaneously opening three restaurants of his own and working as a sommelier!

Why Downtown Stockton?

With a name like “The Downtowner” that could fit into any Downtown area and an owner from the state of Oregon, how did The Downtowner find its home here, in Downtown Stockton? Well, Stockton is the hometown of Kevin’s wife, Barbie. Once his position at the Tetherow Resort expired, they decided to make the move and start a life here. Coincidentally, Kevin fell in love with Downtown Stockton and its possibilities, noting that he particularly liked the beautiful historic architecture that’s found here. As fate would have it, a spot downtown became available for lease and he reached out to Doug, his business partner. A short while later, The Downtowner was open and running! They chose the name, “The Downtowner” because, “not too many business names tell you where they are located in the title!”

How can we support The Downtowner during this time?

The Downtowner has remained open for curbside pick up, delivery, and takeout, so your favorite items, such as the Cobb Salad or Big 10 Burger (which has been deemed by some as the best burger they’ve ever had!) are readily available! The Downtowner’s recently revamped menu also features new items, such as the new Southwestern Grilled Cheese (made with Genova Bakery Sourdough, and melted pepper jack cheese), Avocado Smash, and their house made pork carnitas. If you’ve got a big family and need a break from cooking, they also offer family-style meals for pick up! At the start of this month, the dining room was reopened with some restrictions—visitors can only eat with the group they came in with and are sat six feet away from other tables.

It is often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home, a place where families gather around the warm room for conversation and traditions. The kitchen is more than just a room where food preparation happens, its where bonding happens. Nothing brings people together quite like food. Downtown Stockton is no different because here, the kitchen is now the heart of the community! As of earlier this month, BellaVista is now home to the new Stockton Community Kitchen.

The Perfect Ingredients

Stockton Mayor, Michael Tubbs had long wanted a place where low-income folks with big goals could have their dreams realized, he just never had all the right pieces. Originally he tried to start the program from scratch by guiding a commercial kitchen downtown but that would’ve cost millions of dollars. Since he was never able to find the right person to lead the project, it never got off the ground. That’s when Rima Barkett came in to save the day. She had all the ingredients for the projects success, not only is she an accomplished chef, restauranteur, and author, but she also has an extensive history of philanthropy. Her main passion is giving women who lack opportunities and resources access to them in order to have a fair shot. Rima’s record of working with other non-profits made her the perfect fit to helm this proverbial ship. Rima was able to offer her commercial kitchen for the program’s use. Through her connections, she was able to build a team of experts from the business world and the food industry to volunteer and teach about all aspects entrepreneurs will need to run a successful business.

Cooking up a Brighter Future 

The Stockton Community Kitchen is a local non-profit partnership that aspires to help underserved communities achieve entrepreneurial success. It is a food incubator enterprise that provides its chefs and future business owners all the tools they will need to start a new local business. The goal of the Stockton Community Kitchen is to offer mentorship, support, and business expertise to under-resourced communities in order to help them succeed in the competitive world of food service. Essentially, the offer people who already have the skills in the kitchen, the skills to run a business as well.

A recipe for success

Anyone who wants to apply for the program must first meet the five qualifications. First and foremost, they must be a low-income individual as specified by the Housing and Urban Development guidelines of San Joaquin County. Since their mission is to help elevate those with the highest barriers to entry in the food industry, the Stockton Community Kitchen also takes access to opportunities into consideration. Second, you must have a business idea ready. Once in the program, a mentor can help you refine and build upon your idea but when applying, you must have an idea that is wholly your own. Third, you need to have product viability. When entering a highly competitive industry like the food industry you need to have a unique and innovative concept that sets you apart from other products on the market. Fourth, you must possess an entrepreneurial spirit. Starting a new business can be very demanding and without passion or a strong drive, it can become incredibly overwhelming. Applicants need to show they have a strong work ethic and the grit it takes to start a business from scratch. Lastly, the applicant must have community spirit. Because Stockton is an incredibly diverse community, participants must show that they are able to work with and serve people from all backgrounds.

Application process

Once you have met the qualifications you can go to an application workshop where you’ll be taught how to properly complete the application, while this step isn’t necessary it can be helpful. The program itself consists of four distinct steps. The first step is application and enrollment. The Stockton Community Kitchen accepts applications year-round but the program only runs three times a year. The second step is the pre-incubation. The pre-incubation period is a four-month process where participants will receive hands-on training from industry professionals. They will focus on business basics like product development, marketing, financing, and managing daily operations. During this period participants create their own schedules to meet with their mentors. The third step is the incubator. After a successful first four months, participants will continue their previous training and start to develop skills more specific to their individual business objectives while having access to the affordable commercial kitchen facilities to support their business. The fourth and final step is graduation. After successfully reaching all program benchmarks participants become graduates of the Stockton Community Kitchen.

The goal of the Stockton Community Kitchen is to help underprivileged and underrepresented groups achieve business success and shape the landscape of Stockton’s diverse culinary future

Even though it’s still winter, days are shorter, and you can’t leave home without a jacket (even if its a light one), it’s never too early to start thinking about warmer, sunnier days, and the events they bring with them to Downtown Stockton! El Concilio’s Cinco de Mayo Family Festival

Love families? Love festivals? And love to have a good time? You’re in luck- El Concilio is putting on their annual Cinco de Mayo Family Festival at the Weber Point Events Center on Sunday, May 3rd! The largest Cinco de Mayo Family Fiesta in the Central Valley, the celebration will feature Hispanic culture, dance, and music and will honor and recognize diversity. Various food, beverage and arts and crafts vendors will be present for you to enjoy. Oh and of course, there will also be a children’s activities area for the little ones. Admission is $5, and children 12 and under are free!

Feast at the Fox

Feast at the Fox is a highly anticipated five-course dining experience located on Main Street in Downtown Stockton, right in front of the iconic Bob Hope Theater. This year, Feast of the Fox will take place on May 8th. Put on by Visit Stockton and the Delta College Culinary Arts program, the event will feature a menu of delicious creations by local chefs, made exclusively with fresh ingredients that were harvested from local areas. Not only would you get to indulge in an extraordinary dinner, but you’ll also get to enjoy live entertainment and a silent auction. West Coast Conference Baseball Championships

What better way to spend warm evenings than by viewing America’s favorite pastime and cheering on the red, white and blue of our Stockton Ports? The West Coast Conference Baseball Championships take place between May 20th and May 23rd. There will be a Kids Clinic on the 20th, several baseball games on the 21st and 22nd, and finally, the championship game on Saturday, the 23rd. Check our events Calendar later for more details!

CRAVE Food Festival

We heard you’ve been craving something new, so we found plans for you on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend: Stockton’s newest food festival, CRAVE! From 2pm to 7pm, stroll through four entire blocks to order at tasty food trucks, eat at the irresistibly-smelling street food stalls, savor artisan drinks, and enjoy foodie related surprises. When you need a break after trying the 4th food truck (no judgments here, only encouragement), play some games, or listen and dance along to the live music. Not only do you get to bring your friends, family, and even your enemies if you want to, the event is pet friendly. Free admission, food trucks galore, alcohol and free admission?! Say no more. Feeling thirsty? Downtown Stockton is a thriving community full of businesses teeming with diverse options to satiate your thirst. Name almost any type of beverage and we’ve got it- Tea? Smoothies? Coffee? Boba? BEER? Look no further than our local favorites!

Speaking of beer, we are amidst Stockton’s 8th annual Beer Week, a weeklong celebration of craft beer culture in various participating Stockton locations. From August 9th to the 18th, various breweries, bars and restaurants from the Channel Brewing Company to The Downtowner will be participating in this unBEERlievable annual event. It’s hard not to look forward to spending time with your buds while wallowing in the sounds of clinking glasses and conversation as the distinct scent of beer wafts into the air.  

How exactly did Beer Week start?

Robyn Cheshire, Visit Stockton’s Director of Marketing and Communications shares, “the idea was to try to bring craft brew to Stockton,” referring to craft beer’s near unavailability in Stockton years ago. Times have certainly changed, as she points out, “now we have great craft beer so it’s definitely evolved over the past couple years- there’s a beer culture we want to celebrate.” And celebrate we do- this year, there are over 20 locations participating in Beer Week throughout the city of Stockton doing tap takeovers, specials, beer and food pairings, and more! 

I know what you’re thinking- Downtown Stockton is LIT and you need to know where you can celebrate Stockton Beer Week there. Don’t worry, we got you⁠—below, we’ll be highlighting some Downtown Stockton Beer Week events so you’re in the know! For specific dates, visit our Events Calendar so you can easily mark them in your calendar (they’ll also be available at the bottom of this article)! Robyn also explained that Visit Stockton is “excited that Downtown businesses have always embraced Stockton Beer Week,” and that there are, “even more [participating Downtown businesses] this year than before,” so get ready to hit them all! Participating Downtown Stockton establishments include Cast Iron Trading Co., Channel Brewing Company, The DowntownerDeliberation Room, Empresso Coffeehouse, and Port City Bar N Grill

Cast Iron Trading Co.

Cast Iron Trading Co. is known for having trendy (and aesthetic) seasonal menu items and beverages. For Beer Week, they’re tapping a VERY special beer from a FAMED brewery: Pliny the Elder!  The Russian River Brewing Company who makes Pliny the Elder describes it as “well-balanced with malt, hops, and alcohol, slightly bitter with a fresh hop aroma of floral, citrus, and pine.” Cast Iron will also be hosting Gluten Free Brews & Bites Night, New Glory Brewing Night, and Kill the Kegs ($5 Pint Night). From gluten-free brews and treats from a local gluten-free baker to live music and special bites, what’s not to enjoy? 

Channel Brewing

Channel Brewing Company is a nano brewery and tap room, so you already know it fits perfectly into the Stockton Beer Week festivities! Known for delicious, unique beers and house pizza, Channel Brewing will host Succs & Suds, Beer Choir!, and an Adobo Loco Pop-Up. Participate in a succulent beer mug arrangement workshop, belt out some notes with the Beer Choir, and taste Stockton native Chef Rob’s delicious creations while sipping on beer specials. 

The Downtowner

The Downtowner specializes in comfort food with a healthy twist. For the entirety of Beer Week, they’ll have a special menu not only featuring High Water Brewing Beers, but also dishes that they’ve cooked with it such as Beer Ceviche and the Hop Burger! On the last day of Beer Week, the Downtowner is going out with a bang, hosting a Brewer’s Dinner complete with 5 courses, each paired with a beer. Seating is limited so reserve your spot ASAP.  

The Deliberation Room

 The 1920s Speakeasy vibes of The Deliberation Room make it a perfect addition to Stockton Beer Week.  Exclusively on August 16th, they’ll be featuring Stone Brewing beer on their menu. For only $25, you get an appetizer sampler, four Stone Brewing beer samples, and your choice of a full size beer in a Stone Brewing glass that you get to take home!   

Empresso Coffeehouse

The 222 N. El Dorado location of Empresso Coffeehouse will be hosting an Open Mic Extravaganza on August 15th at 7pm. Come perform a song and have a beer, or if you’re a little shy, have a beer and then perform a song! Local musician Seth Jacks and friends will be hosting and there will be beer specials all day long. All genres are welcome, so if that beer helps you invent a new genre, grab the mic and show what you’ve got!

Our four, local coffee shops downtown are nothing of the ordinary. Each with their own feel, flare and vibe, they all stand out for various reasons. Unique tastes, atmospheres, and flow of people significantly set these locations apart. What they do have in common, however, is a heartfelt mission to serve the community that they’re proud to call home.

Once you’ve visited one spot, you definitely can’t say you’ve seen (or tasted) ‘em all. Every place tells a different story, especially with the distinctly different flavor profiles of espresso they offer. There’s nothing wrong with having a favorite or a preference…just trust us,  though, as we rave about each and every one of these coffee havens. You’re not doing downtown Stockton justice without getting all the local, espresso feels. So please, let your tastebuds take a flavor tour and #treatyourself to these gems we’re so lucky to have nestled on our blocks.

EMPRESSO COFFEEHOUSE 222 N. El Dorado St. + 22 N. San Joaquin St.

Two locations strong in the area, Empresso Coffeehouse has a very solid clientele. Known for being “the spot,” most faithful customers remember the good old days on Miracle Mile and have been committed ever since. This is even true for newer barista, Janice Cervantes, who reminisces about when she first became a fan of the coffee shop. When asked what made her want to start working there, she shares, “. . .I used to go to the one on Miracle Mile before it closed down—that was like ‘the spot.’

“Just the vibe” of Empresso has been enough to keep Janice coming back to visit, and now work for, this well-known hotspot. It’s only been a few weeks for her behind the counter, but she says “I really enjoy it; I learn a lot about coffee.” Like one would expect, she particularly enjoys the perks of drinking coffee “every day at work,” with her go-to being a Dirty Chai. She’s pretty certain it’s not just her personal fave either as she states “It’s, like, the most popular drink [we offer].”

Juan Espino, on the other hand, has been serving Empresso customers for a few years now. He’s that friendly, familiar face behind the counter; if you frequent any location, you’ve definitely encountered him. Making sure things run smoothly as a manager, what he enjoys best and “what keeps [him there]” (besides the coffee) is “meeting the people—serving the community.” Not only can he serve you latte art – he’s got a big heart. He continues to share, “You know, you get to meet great people comin’ in and out every day. . .and it’s good to see that you can make a difference in their day. . .” What better way to get your delicious espresso, than with intentional and exceptional customer service? Wow…

Their theater location focuses on “serving the people of the plaza” and Juan explains that they “get more of, like, the police force and Stockton PD that comes in towards the morning…afternoon for lunch.” But he does say that they also “get a lot of [other] people as well, like moviegoers,” while “the county building that [they] have on San Joaquin. . .pretty much takes care of a lot of the county workers and those that are in the area.”

Whichever location of Empresso you choose to enjoy, you really won’t be disappointed. And if Cold Brew is your thing, throw one back with Juan. He tells us he likes “drinking the Cold Brew.” Like most coffee fanatics, he says “I drink the coffee for the caffeine and taste. And our Cold Brew, it’s less acidic. It’s more of a smoother taste, and it’s strong coffee.” Whatever your preference is, Empresso is ready to happily serve you.

RED’S 13 S. San Joaquin St.

Earlier this year, we got to know Michael Brooking in another feature post about his tiny but mighty shop, Red’s. (If you haven’t read it yet, pause real quick and check it out, then make your way back here ;)) Mike’s a great guy who sincerely appreciates a great blend of beans. He confidently says, “I love real good espresso. I drink black coffee, and I drink espresso. I’m a hot [coffee drinker]. I have it in the morning. . .plus, everyday [to adjust my machine] I have to pull a few shots. . .” so he always has a steady flow of “black magic.”

Along with his healthy relationship with good coffee, Mike is passionate about serving his loyal community. Fun fact: he predominantly serves people working for the government. And he tells us, “When I got this place before. . .it was a hangout for a lot of public defenders—it was more known for that. A lot of the people that were here were public defenders…and other attorneys, district attorneys. Now, there’s more than there was. But it’s always kind of been a legal hangout, even before I had it. I think [that’s] just because of proximity to the courthouse.”

Coffee, as we all know, pretty much makes the world go ‘round. The love of this liquid gold transcends a lot, including occupation. Though mostly courthouse employees are known to keep this spot running, if you’re not government employed, don’t hesitate to make face and meet the cool, community-serving man himself. Mike says, “The people who come here—everybody knows each other. It’s got that feeling. . .there are some really cool conversations that happen in here.”

We need more opportunities to connect, so what better place to spark up great conversations than at Red’s with great coffee in your hand. All that said, don’t be shy; swing by and try a signature drink off Mike’s menu. He keeps it simple, and his Cold Brew is the summer fave. “That machine never stops. I sell the heck out of it,” he shares. Lastly, another favorite that people can’t get enough of is his take on a Cubano, with “raw sugar, some cinnamon, two shots of espresso and a little steamed half & half.” Take his word for it and try one—he says “It’s real good. I sell a lot of ‘em.”

TERRA COFFEE 111 S. Sutter St.

If you have a little extra time on your hands, take your espresso cravings to Terra Coffee. With a fresh rotation of art on the walls of their gallery each month, there’s always an extra reason to try a few specialties on their menu (to be revamped very soon, FYI). (Just like I did the other day) It’s easy to get lost in the euphoric experience of enjoying a delightful, iced coffee while being mesmerized by creativity everywhere you look. This place is extremely eclectic and interesting. And no worries—you don’t have to be an artist to enjoy one of their concoctions, but you can pretty much count on their baristas to be hyped to chat about anything artsy.

Akeen Smith, newbie barista of Terra, couldn’t rave more about the arts when discussing all things coffee. It was inspiring to hear how his passion for art bleeds into his time making drinks behind the counter. He’s still learning the ropes, but he says “It’s fun! I enjoy it, really. I’m really into art, so anything that has an art to it, I’m into it.” He’s in the training process of pulling shots and with his love for creating things, he’s sure to get the hang of the art of pouring in no time. He was specifically enthusiastic when he shared about getting to learn from one of the partners/owners. It’s “a privilege in itself,” he states, “‘cause I just get to learn so much that I didn’t even know existed within the coffee world.” Clearly invested and thankful for the environment he’s now planted in, he humbly shares, “I told them in my interview, ‘You guys could probably pay me $9.25/hr. and I wouldn’t even care…’ That’s how great the vibe is here.” That statement alone speaks volumes of the positive impact of this vibrant space.

A coffee shop is an authentic breeding ground for community. Akeen explains “It’s really fun to. . .meet new people too. Like, I meet so many people here—so many people embrace me. It’s so fun. You know, my work is not really work.” Speaking heavily to Terra’s heartbeat for the community, Akeen elaborates the way they go the extra mile for every person that walks through their doors. He says, “We’re genuine, you know. We really care about our customers. We care about your experience. . .we just really want it to be fun. We [take the time to] learn our customers, and learn about their day. [We] literally have customers that come in here and get coffee (that have to get back to work), and they’ll…sit there and talk to us—have a full conversation before they [head] back. That’s the organic vibe that we bring, you know?”

Terra understands the importance of connection. They make it a point to “just listen to someone’s day,” Akeen explains, “… half of the people that come in are. . .dealing with business people all day or are dealing with customers who weren’t so nice to them. So to come in [there, they] want you to feel welcome, and chill…” He even goes as far as to say “vent if you need to.” It’s a clear invitation—come as you are to Terra! They’ve got your back; they’ve got your art fix, and of course, they’ve got all your coffee needs covered.

If you’re indecisive, wondering what to try next, maybe start with Akeen’s favorite—the Dulce de Leche Latte. It also happens to be a customer fave, along with the Blank Canvas (white chocolate, toasted marshmallow, vanilla and espresso) and the Viva Mocha (their take on a Mexican hot chocolate with coffee). (Mmm…I’m not drooling, you’re drooling!!) Really, there’s no reason to not frequent this place, especially knowing there’s “free 30 min parking at F lot” per their bio on Insta. Sooo, get that coffee, see that art.

TRAIL COFFEE ROASTERS 501 E. Main St.

Last but not least is the ever so aesthetically pleasing Trail Coffee Roasters. With one of the best workspaces downtown, they know how to keep you coming back with their addictive creations like the Honey Lavender Latte paired with one of their infamous scones (freshly baked in house every morning, might I add). They stand out in their own, stunning way, but we’ll let their espresso speak for itself (especially in their “to die for” affogatos…ugh, so yum). Gosh, if you have yet to visit this iconic spot, you are truly missing out. What drew Gianna Vicari, part owner/café manager, downtown is that, “There are so many different people that are down here on any given day,” she says. “And there’s a lot of space to do, you know, what we’re doing down here with the roasting room and the bakery and this size café. I really don’t see [a benefit in] opening up anywhere else in Stockton.” She “comes up with all of the recipes,” says Zach Bailey, roasting guru/manager. They “make all of [their] own syrups in house” because they are serious about putting their best, espresso foot forward. Gianna says, “Gotta do the coffee justice. That’s why. . .I don’t feel comfortable adding store-bought sweetener [to our coffee].” Trail puts great effort into blending in organics as much as possible in their recipes. They pretty much make everything there. And Zach jokes, “Obviously, we don’t milk our own cows, but” they use organic milk and the tastiest options for the alternatives.

While Zach’s caffeinated cup of choice is Cold Brew, he tells us that he “usually defaults to a Cinnamon Caramel Latte” when someone says “Surprise me!” while he’s on bar. It’s not on the menu, but you can have it—just ask! Gianna, on the other hand, shares with us, “My favorite drink to make and enjoy is the Cortado. It’s my go-to.” Per Zach, she has one every day. “I love serving it to customers,” she states, “‘cause I think the presentation is just so cool. And, I love drinking it…”

If you didn’t already know this fun fact about Trail, Zach enlightens us by sharing, “Most of our beans are all from our farm; we have our own farm in Nicaragua. That’s really special. . .I would highlight [that] as something that’s unique about us. We’re probably one of [about] five or so places in the country that actually have direct connections to their own farm.”

Next time you pop in, if roasting intrigues you, ask Zach about it while you wait for your order. He “love[s] the science of it.” Hearing about his experience over the years, you can trust the coffee beans that make up your delicious cup have been in good hands. “Honestly,” he says “I kind of ‘nerd out’ with that a little bit. It’s—it’s interesting to me. I like stretching roasts different ways and then looking at the profile that we get from our computer program. And then, like, tasting it…”

Whatever brings you in to this location, just make sure you’re walking out with a liquid pick-me-up in your hand. We encourage double fisting too, so next time you’re there, consider putting a smile on someone else’s face by sharing the love (laced espresso). They’re doing it right at Trail. We know first-hand and we’re super thankful for the flavor of happiness they bring to our community.

We are crazy about every single one of these spots. We’re entirely grateful for how they each serve downtown Stockton a unique flavor. Since we can’t live without coffee, we definitely can’t live without them! We’re so fortunate to have such loyal, local shops who are just as concerned with serving our community well as they are with serving quality coffee. You know that when you wake up on a Monday morning, you just need a cup of coffee to get you through the day. In fact, you probably need a cup of coffee everyday before diving into the hustle and bustle of life and work. In Downtown Stockton, there are a lot of hard working people and they have plenty of places to choose from when they need their coffee. One of those places is Red’s Coffee, a small shop located at 13 South San Joaquin Street. 

Serving the Downtown Community

Red’s Coffee has been located downtown for about ten years and as downtown Stockton thrives and prospers, Red’s has done the same. Michael Brooking started Red’s Coffee because of his passion for the caffeinated beverage. “I fell in love with coffee when I was really young and I always wanted to have a coffee shop when I was about 18 or 19.” Eventually, that dream came true and Red’s has been serving the community ever since. 

What makes Red’s Coffee so special? Brooking explained what sets Red’s apart from other coffee shops. “I’m definitely a local coffee shop. I have a local roaster out in Vallejo and he’s been roasting for about 28 years, all organic, fair trade coffee. The coffee I have is always within ten days of being roasted. I rotate it fresh. I know how to pull a proper shot of espresso and I don’t do blended drinks. I’m not really a sugar shop.”  

Neighborhood Shop

“This is truly a neighborhood shop. I’m not a destination coffee shop. To come to my shop you have to work for it. That being said, every building around here, the county building, city hall. the court house, that’s who I’m working for.” Brooking knows his customers and he’s ready to serve them their coffee before they start their day. “I have new customers all the time, but I have a regular base and this is their home. It’s been a hangout for attorneys and judges for a long time. A lot of public defenders hang out here. It’s kind of a home and I know almost everyone.” 

And even with so many other places available for people to get their coffee, Brooking doesn’t see Red’s in competition with anyone. “The more the better. I don’t have a famine mentality. It’s great to have this community growing here. I’ve watched all these businesses come and I know there are more coming. Stockton is primed right now for a lot of good stuff.” 

So if you’re in the area and you need a bit of a caffeine boost, you should definitely pay a quick visit to Red’s Coffee. They are open Monday – Friday from 6 – 11 AM. It’s a unique part of downtown Stockton – you won’t find a place like it anywhere else.

Bicycling! Whether it’s a hobby, how you get to work, or a way of life, there are a series of events coming soon that you need to be aware of right away! For the fifth year, the Downtown Stockton Alliance is hosting the Full Moon Riders starting TODAY, April 20th. The Full Moon Riders will be gathering to ride every month on the evening of the full moon from April through October. Each ride will be led by various local organizations and be an opportunity to experience the wonder of downtown Stockton. This will also be the first time that the Downtown Stockton Alliance will be donating $1 per rider to a different non-profit organization at each ride.

Courtney Wood, the economic development coordinator for the Downtown Stockton Alliance  explained the background and purpose of the Full Moon Riders event. “I think the original goal was that downtown was kind of empty at certain times and [the Downtown Stockton Alliance] were like, ‘wow, this would be great to have bike riding here’ because there aren’t many cars in the evenings when people go home from their offices. So it’s kind of a cool place to bike ride. I think that was part of it: to get people down here to use the streets to promote bicycling.”

Bikes & Bites

Not only is this event an opportunity to give visitors and residents a unique look at downtown Stockton, but also a chance to grab a bite to eat with fellow cyclists. At the end of rides, leaders will direct the riders to some of their favorite restaurants in the area for a filling and delicious dinner or maybe just a quick snack. If anything, it is a chance for people to come together after a fun ride and take pleasure in some downtown Stockton cuisine. Some participating restaurants may even have special deals and offers for the Full Moon Riders.

And if that still doesn’t sound like a good time, there will also be a giveaway at each ride for the first 100 riders. Registration always begins at 5:15pm in Janet Leigh Plaza on the day of the ride.  

The Downtown Stockton Alliance Ambassadors will be helping out at the event. Special events ambassador Shirley Griffith explained the role that the ambassadors play during the event. “We have a table set up with giveaways and signup sheets, so at the beginning we get everybody’s name and email. We also take liability forms and give the riders the giveaway prize. And when they leave the plaza to go on their rides, we load everything up, go to the restaurant that is participating that night and put out bike racks.” So while everyone is enjoying themselves on their rides, it’s the ambassadors that are making sure everyone has a great experience. 

So if you’re someone who simply enjoys a leisurely bike ride or you’re a passionate bicyclist, you definitely want to join the Full Moon Riders and experience another side of downtown Stockton. Just remember to ride responsibly and that children under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet.

There are so many food options to choose from when hanging out in downtown. No matter what you are in the mood for, you are sure to find exactly what you are looking for here.

If you are ever craving some authentic Mexican food, pay a visit to Elisco’s Fresh Mexican Grill. They are a newly opened business located at 125 Bridge Place, near the movie theater; they bring a unique flavor to the downtown area that is hard to beat and you are sure to enjoy.

Elisco’s Chicken Tostadas

Whether it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you will be able to find something on their menu to satisfy your appetite. If you need a filling breakfast, get a breakfast burrito stuffed with eggs, potatoes, bacon, ham, and chorizo. Or maybe you are in the mood for huevos rancheros: two over-easy eggs with sauce over a tostada with rice, beans, and cheese. You will be sure to finish breakfast happy and stuffed.

When it is later in the day and you are looking for something to eat for lunch or dinner, there are even more options. Maybe a burrito with your choice of meat, beans, rice, sour cream, pico de gallo, and salsa. Or a super BIG taco with your choice of meat, beans, pico de gallo, salsa, avocado, and cheese. They even have vegetarian tacos, burritos, and salads if meat is not your thing. No matter what you are in the mood for, you will find something tasty on their menu.

Downtown Stockton is a place where everyone can find a little corner that fits their needs or interests. If you’re interested in fitness, healthy treats, or just enjoy a tasty shake, then Stocktown Nutrition might become your new favorite place.

Stocktown Nutrition is brand new to downtown Stockton, located at 211 East Weber Avenue,  and it is a fun little shop that is a go-to place for those looking to live a healthier lifestyle. As soon as you walk through the door, you’re greeted by smiling faces, uplifting music, and a menu of delicious and refreshing teas and shakes.

Tami Tennis, owner of Stocktown Nutrition, explained to us the services that they provide to new customers. “Stocktown Nutrition is a high-energy positive place where we help people be healthy. We offer a service here that is three different products for a total of $8.
