“The power of service!” is the slogan proudly displayed at Success Ink, a full service copy and print center in Downtown Stockton. Their unwavering commitment to these words are undeniable, as 2020 marks the 20th year Success Ink has been in operation! To celebrate this remarkable milestone, we sat down with Curtis Boone, owner of Success Ink, to learn more about him and his business.

Meet Curtis Boone

Although a longtime resident of Stockton, Curtis is originally from Torrance, a city located in Southern California. In 1996, he moved north to settle into Stockton, where his mother owned Mitchell’s BBQ right here in Downtown Stockton. Fun Fact: Mitchell’s BBQ was located at 19 N. California Street, in the building The Deliberation Room currently occupies.

Why A Printing Business?

During his time working at Mitchell’s BBQ, Curtis learned how to create business cards, flyers, and other promotional material for the restaurant. This is where he developed a passion for graphic design (which he explains used to be referred to as “desktop publishing”). This sparked the realization that he “enjoyed that [graphic design] more than restauranting.” He started off enjoying graphic design, but expanded the idea to a print shop once he realized there was a lack of printing services downtown. After the family sold Mitchell’s BBQ, Curtis opened Success Ink at 502 E. Weber Ave in February 2000.

When asked why Curtis decided to continue running a business in the downtown area rather than anywhere else, he shares with us a few reasons. First, it was a convenient location! After all, he already knew the area well. In addition, he could run Success Ink for a great price! Compared to his Southern California hometown, running a business was a lot cheaper in Stockton. In Stockton, there is, “room for you to grow, you just need consistency.”

Twenty Years of Service

There’s another important “20” in 2020- the 20 Year Anniversary of Success Ink! Curtis and the Success Ink team hoped to have a celebration in February, but unfortunately, these plans were put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because they’re an essential service, Success Ink has been open throughout the entire pandemic and will continue to have their doors open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm. Once the pandemic ends, they will revert back to their regular hours.

Success Ink is a full service copy and print center, where you’re even able to print directly from your smartphone (talk about convenient)! They also print various promotional items, including but not limited to posters, brochures, business cards, and banners. If you need assistance designing these materials, Success Ink also offers graphic design services! Gone is the need to spend countless hours confused in photoshop trying to piece together the perfect flyer for your business (we know how this feels).

What Do You Like Most About Downtown?

When it comes to what Curtis likes most about downtown, it doesn’t take him any time to name his favorite restaurant: Thai Thai Restaurant (which he accompanies with an enthusiastic, “I love Thai food!). Curtis also enjoys the people downtown and commends the work of organizations like the Downtown Stockton Alliance (thanks for the shout out, Curtis!) and Visit Stockton. Curtis also loves to support other local businesses and is “always eager to find new places.”

So the next time you’re in need of print services, you can expect the best quality and service from Success Ink!

The DSA’s Community Ambassador Team serve as “eyes and ears” in the downtown area. Although they are not downtown security, they are here to make the community feel safer. Back in February, we introduced the Community Ambassador program in a blog article. Now, we’d like to give you an update on the program by featuring an interview with one of our community ambassadors: Dejon Underdue! His enthusiasm and positive energy throughout the interview was infectious, and his passion for the downtown community shone through his words. We’re proud to have him on our team.

MEET DEJON

Born and raised in Stockton, Dejon pridefully shares, “I like doing things for people any way I can- especially for the community.” Along with his current role as DSA Community Ambassador, Dejon also operates the Baby Bottoms Diaper Bank, an organization that supplies free diapers for babies and infants for families in need. In the past, Dejon also worked with his family to run and operate a safe haven for victims of domestic violence. When he isn’t helping others, Dejon spends his time making music. In fact, he’s a three-time Grammy nominated musician and producer! Whether he’s patrolling downtown areas, lending a helping hand to others, or even working on producing music, one thing is clear- Dejon is passionate about giving back to the community.

WHY HE BECAME A COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR

Dejon first heard about the Community Ambassador program earlier this year from his mother, and landed the position in early February. After completing his first training during a shift, he reflects, “I loved it.” Dejon expresses that the role can be challenging at times, yet fulfilling, as he’s, “always down for things that make me [him] think; things that require judgment calls.”

Communicating with those in the community is another reason Dejon is so passionate about his role, as he enjoys, “dealing with different people.” He explains that Community Ambassadors work to connect individuals in need to various resources, such as shelters or food banks. They also help in other ways, including but not limited to helping fix flat tires or escorting people to their cars at night. The assistance they offer, “takes a lot of stress off of people…makes life easier for people.”

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

From when the Community Ambassador Program was first implemented in February to now, Dejon shares that the difference is like “night and day. Now, people are coming up to us all the time saying, ‘we can actually walk around at night now!’” He’s happy that the Community Ambassadors are making a difference, and wants everyone in downtown to know, “I’m here to assist and I’ll be here every single shift.”

In addition to helping community members feel safe, Community Ambassadors also work closely with the Stockton Police Department. Officers are grateful to have their help, as the ambassadors can take care of smaller matters (loitering, escorting, etc.) and can also quickly alert and inform the police when a situation arises.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE

When asked what he’s most excited to see in the future, Dejon answers that he wants to see a decline in loitering and hopes to continue, “guiding people in the right direction.” In regards to the program, he says there is, “so much we have planned and so many ideas for the future. I’m excited for the future.”

So the next time you’re downtown, you may see Dejon during one of his shifts, or you might catch him grabbing a bite at Port City Sports Bar & Grill (after all, he says, “I find myself spending half my paycheck there!”). If you do run into him, don’t be afraid to say hello!

In efforts to stay safe and mitigate the spread of COVID-19, many upcoming events have been cancelled or postponed until further notice. However, this doesn’t mean you have to sit at home bored out of your mind during your free time! Today, we decided to compile a list of ways you can enjoy yourself from the comforts of your home- from following tutorials to participating in virtual events, there’s something for everyone!

Events

Virtual FMR
This year, our Full Moon Riders (FMR) event is going virtual! Normally, Full Moon Riders are monthly group bike rides that take place between the months of April and October. The rides typically begin at the Janet Leigh Plaza and end at a downtown restaurant. This year, we will be hosting one virtual FMR bike ride, which means you can bike the predetermined route at your own pace during the month of September! Follow the route, snap pictures along the way (more details to come), send them in to us, and you’ll receive a free FMR face mask and a $20 meal voucher (valid at select downtown eateries)! Additional details will be on our Facebook page soon.

StocktonCon Online
Are you an artist or cosplayer? Are you a fan of all things pop culture? Then make sure to check out this year’s virtual StocktonCon! The event took place August 15th-16th, but all of the livestreams are still available on their Facebook page. Enjoy art tutorials from professional artists and various panels: supreme pro wrestling, cosplay, voice acting panels, and more. Next year’s StocktonCon will take place at the Stockton Area on August 14-15th, so there’s plenty of time to prepare that new cosplay!

Talk to Downtown
Every second Wednesday of the month, the Downtown Stockton Alliance hosts our Talk to Downtown Facebook Livestream. Our goal is to connect you to city, county, and other organizations to answer any questions you may have about our local community. Getting the your questions to us is easy- just leave a comment during the livestream or send an email to our Marketing Director, Jessica, prior to the livestream!  This month, our featured guest was Stockton’s City Manager, Harry Black. If you missed the live, you can watch it (and all of our other previous Talk to Downtown livestreams) on our Youtube Channel

Stockton Strong Marketplace
The Stockmarket is a curated marketplace that features some of the best local crafts, art, and street food. It’s been postponed, but you can still support local artists and makers from home by shopping online at the Stockton Strong Marketplace! Here you’ll find unique earrings to add to your jewelry box, seasoning spice blends to flavor your next meal, aromatic candles to gracefully light up the dark corners of your room, and much more. Happy shopping!

By Courtney Wood

As more people pursue diets that increase the inclusion of plant-based foods or reduce the consumption of meat products (for health benefits, animal rights reasons, religious reasons, environmental reasons, or simply a matter of personal preference), the demand for vegetarian and vegan friendly options has risen. Restaurants and food manufacturers have decided to step up to the challenge, and Downtown Stockton restaurants are in on this trend!

Having spent the past 16 years as a vegetarian, and the past 4 years working Downtown, I have decided to share a few of my favorite Downtown vegetarian lunches with you so that all the vegetarians, vegans, flexitarians, and omnivores out there looking for options can discover the veggie-friendly treasures our Downtown restaurants have to offer.

*Please note that when I use the term “vegetarian” in this article, I am using it to mean lacto-ovo vegetarian. Also, I want to stress that if you have dietary restrictions, preferences, or allergies, always communicate them to restaurant staff prior to ordering for your own peace of mind and safety.*

#1 The Downtowner – VEGAN Nachos

The first dish on my list is The Downtowner’s Vegan Nachos, which are so delectable that you won’t want to share (warn your stay-at-home roomie or partner). The flavors in these nachos will definitely surprise you in the most “can’t stop eating them” way. The chips themselves are fried corn tortillas, and they are covered in a cashew-based sauce with a savory sage kick to it. The combination of the sauce with other awesome toppings like avocado smash, black beans, and pickled jalapenos will make you wonder if any nachos from your past life were ever actually good.

Aside from this filling nachos dish, The Downtowner has several other vegetarian and vegan friendly meals and sides to choose from, including the Portabello Sandwich, the Big V Burrito, and more. The Downtowner is a great spot for trying experimental flavors that will liven up your day.

#2 Kabob & Gyro House – Falafel Salad

Next up is Kabob & Gyro House’s Falafel salad. Yes, I know, a salad. If you’ve been a vegetarian for a while or even if you’re not vegetarian, anytime someone mentions “we brought a salad,” you’re likely underwhelmed due to the insane number of sad iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrot shredded “salads” we’ve all been tortured with for decades.

I am happy to say that this salad is different!

Many times a salad can miss the mark either due to a lack of flavor or lack of a substantial protein source and I am pleased to say that this salad suffers from neither problem. Romaine lettuce, deliciously flavorful olives, a tangy dressing, and a touch of feta (ask them to hold the feta if you are vegan) are topped with crispy, hearty falafel scoops. For those of you who are unfamiliar with falafel, it usually contains chickpeas, herbs, and wheat flour (check with staff if you are avoiding gluten) all mashed together in a dough that is then fried to golden perfection. If you want to add to your heavenly experience, order a side of hummus and add a dollop on top.

If this dish sounds appealing, but you want to try falafel a different way, they also offer a Falafel Burger, Falafel Wrap and Falafel Plate! If you are vegan be sure to ask staff about ingredients before ordering (some of the sauces may contain dairy or eggs).

#3 Moomoo’s Burger Barn – “No Moo” Burger

Are you surprised that I’m including a hamburger place?

Here’s why – Moo Moo’s is one of those awesome burger spots which understands that sometimes people who don’t eat meat still want something chargrilled and wrapped in a bun. Moomoo’s offers a vegetarian patty in place of a regular patty on any of their burger sandwiches – the “No Moo” as it reads on their menu. In addition to the vegetarian patty option, they also have a gluten-free bun (yay!) for those avoiding gluten (double check with staff if you are avoiding egg). This is my go-to place for a veggie burger in Downtown. The patty – topped with ketchup, mustard, a bit of onion, and a piece of crispy lettuce – nestled on the gluten free bun and plated with a pickle will make you forget beef is even a thing (we all know it’s the toppings and sauce that REALLY make a burger).

#4 Cast Iron – VEGAN Brussels Sprout Tacos

If you’re looking for a late lunch, and are craving street food with a twist, look no further than Cast Iron Trading Co.’s vegan brussels sprouts tacos. Delicious, slightly crispy brussels sprouts are covered in a spicy vegan chipotle crema and wrapped in a corn tortilla. Try these with a cold craft beer or glass of on-tap kombucha and enjoy the restaurant’s new outdoor seating!

If brussels sprouts don’t excite you, Cast Iron also serves a Beyond Meat patty burger with a tasty pesto sauce.

#5 Misaki Sushi & Bar – Vegetemp Roll

Misaki’s may be popular for their fish, eel, sea urchin, and crab-based based fare, but they also have savory vegetarian options, like the tasty Vegetemp Roll. This roll features lightly battered and crisply fried asparagus or carrot tempura pieces at its center, and arrives with those familiar sushi bar sidekicks of pickled ginger and wasabi. If you really want to amp up the yum factor, ask to add avocado and cream cheese (if you’re not vegan, of course).

More options can be found on their menu in the “Vegetarian Delights” section, but some notable ones include the Avokyu roll, the full order of Vegetable Tempura, Vegetable Udon, and the Chuka Wakame salad (made entirely of marinated seaweed – listed in the “Appetizers” section). Check with your waiter if you are gluten-free or vegan to see which options will fit your unique needs.

#6 Thai Thai Restaurant – Yellow Curry

The red, yellow, pumpkin, and avocado curries from Thai Thai restaurant are the cure for anyone bored of boiled vegetables flavored with salt and pepper. Over the years, I’ve found that flavor variety can make or break your enthusiasm for your next plant-based meal. Fortunately, Thai food has a lovely mix of sweet, spicy, savory, and salty aspects to tickle all of your tastebuds.

Thai Thai’s Yellow curry offers perfectly cooked potatoes and onions in a slightly sweet, expertly seasoned sauce. I suggest adding basil to complement the curry’s flavor and tofu if you want to up the protein content. When placing your order, staff will ask you to note how spicy you want your dish – medium, hot or Thai hot – so there are options to suit everyone’s heat tolerance!

Aside from Thai Thai’s amazing curries, another vegetarian friendly option is the Pad Thai dish (order without egg if you’re vegan).

Yellow Curry, photo by Mystery M. on Yelp

Here are a few honorable mentions:

Papa Urb’s Grill – for a quick snack, try the veggie lumpia (check with staff if you are avoiding egg)

Casa Flores – for a build-your-own kind of lunch, order a side of beans (ask for no cheese if you are vegan), with salsa, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, and a few warm corn tortillas

Subway –  for a vegetarian, protein-filled sandwich, just “sub” the veggie patty for meat on any of their sandwiches or wraps (or add it to a salad if you’re trying to eat fewer carbs)

Alfalfa’s – if you need a slice of pizza to make your day, Alfalfa’s has individual slices of plain cheese as well as vegetarian pizza for you to enjoy while walking around downtown

Now that you know about these veggie-friendly choices, we hope you’ve been inspired to try something new, (or at least have found a few places where you can bring your vegetarian friends).

The past few months have certainly been life changing. Living during an ongoing pandemic spanning the globe means we have to face many challenges as we learn to adapt to these unprecedented times. The future may still seem uncertain, but there’s one thing that is for sure: we’re all in this together. Thank you for doing your best to stay safe and for keeping those around you safe.

In today’s blog, we want to remind you of the good that is still happening in our community- how working together (safely and with social distancing in place) uplifts our local businesses, organizations, and community members. So, we made a list of some of the good things happening downtown.

Stockton Community Kitchen at BellaVista

You may have been to BellaVista for a delicious dinner with your friends and family or you may have attended one of their exciting rooftop events (that view though!), but did you know about BellaVista’s partnership with the Stockton Community Kitchen (SCK)? The SCK was created to assist underprivileged entrepreneurs with dreams of launching food-related businesses. During this pandemic, the SCK at BellaVista prepares and delivers hundreds of meals a day to those in need in the community, including struggling families, the elderly, and the homeless.

The Stockton Community Kitchen will also be holding classes for a few weeks starting in August, where they will provide mentorship, skills and business expertise for aspiring food entrepreneurs. If you’re a food enthusiast looking for help to start your own business, here’s your chance! For information about the classes, visit their website.

Revitalization and Beautification of Chun Wah Lane

This July, the DSA’s maintenance crew began work on the planned revitalization and beautification of Chun Wah Lane. Look forward to seeing fresh coats of paint on the poles, new arches, fresh greenery, and an update to one of the most recognizable features of the lane: the fierce, fire-breathing dragon mosaic! We’re excited to show you the progress on the space as we reach the completion of the project to revitalize Chun Wah Lane, so make sure you’re following us on Facebook and Instagram to see our progress photos!

Homeless Facility in the Works

The former Alutzia Hotel and Restaurant, a popular downtown spot in the 1920s, is currently undergoing renovations to become a homeless facility for homeless women and children. Once completed, it will be one of the largest housing facilities of its kind in the nation. The Gospel Center Rescue Mission purchased the building in the 1980s and started raising funds for the project in 2016. The facility’s expected completion is in the fall of this year.

Outdoor Dining Available for Some Businesses

Temporary closure of indoor dining operations mean local businesses need your support more than ever! You can help by placing takeout orders and delivery orders though various food delivery services (DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc.). Additionally, some downtown businesses now offer outdoor seating for visitors to enjoy. Here’s a list of the downtown eateries still open for takeout, delivery, and outdoor dining. Thank you for continuing to support our local businesses!
