HISTORY
The Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium, most commonly referred to as the Civic Auditorium, was dedicated on Veteran’s Day in 1926 in memory of those who lost their lives in WWI. The Civic Auditorium was finished in stucco meant to resemble sandstone and trimmed with terracotta. Polychrome panels were designed by Joseph Wicks with a seal of the City of Stockton, the great seal of the State of California, and the federal government on each side. Emblems of the American Legion, the Spanish-American War Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Grand Army of the Republic were included. The frieze around the building bears 12 emblems representing the different branches of the armed forces.
Historic photos show how McLeod Lake extended between Civic auditorium and City Hall all the way to El Dorado Street. If you look at some of those photos, you’ll see the many different boats that were docked between the City Hall and the Civic Auditorium.
