Art on Utility Boxes

Mural Art on Downtown Utility Boxes

Downtown Stockton Alliance, in partnership with The Stockton Mural Art Resource Team (SMART) initiated in 2013 a mural design contest for high school and college students, “Out of the Box.” The purpose of the contest is to select original art for permanent murals on public utility boxes in high visibility locations in the downtown area. Murals depict “Stockton” themes focusing on history, community, diversity, unity, and creativity.

A total of eight boxes were painted from June 2014 to April 2015. Funding was provided by the DSA’s Downtown Stockton Improvement Fund. Student artists were paired with SMART Project’s mentors who are professional artists based in Stockton.
