Encarta Dictionary: busker (noun)
Street entertainer – U.K. - Somebody who entertains in the street
or a public place in the hope of receiving money from passers-by.
The Downtown Stockton Alliance is seeking local buskers to perform on downtown sidewalks and public spaces: jugglers, mimes,
balloon modelers, puppeteers, sidewalk magicians, poets, costumed characters (human robots and statues, aliens, superheroes), acoustic musicians, singers, clowns, dancers, sketch artists, face painters – anyone who has an act, a talent or an idea they want to share with the public. To apply call Jennifer Plassmeyer at (209) 464-5246.
Under a new agreement with the City of Stockton, the Alliance will recruit, schedule and coordinate street entertainers throughout downtown Stockton. Interested street entertainers will pay an initial $20 fee for a trial application, good for four one-day performances. The program will allow entertainers to work at an assigned location for a period of time and “pass the hat” or receive donations in a container. They will not be allowed to require a fee for their performances or follow pedestrians to solicit donations. If the four initial assignments are successful for the entertainers, nearby businesses and the Alliance, the entertainers may then participate in the program for the remainder of the calendar year for additional $30.
The Alliance envisions performers able to work as many dates as they have available, at a variety of downtown locations. The Alliance will schedule and assign the entertainers, to ensure pedestrian safety and appropriateness to the surrounding businesses. Entertainers will operate as independent contractors with their only compensation in the form of donations from audiences. The $50 annual program fee will cover some of the costs of recruiting and coordinating performers and businesses and providing publicity for the program. For their fee, performers will have access to the most up-to-date information on downtown events, movie and new business openings, and pedestrian traffic, to ensure the largest possible audiences for their work.
